Ginza, Tokyo

The Ginza isTokyo's most famous upmarket shopping, dining and entertainment district, featuring numerous famous department stores, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, night clubs and cafes.

One square meter of land in the district's center is worth more than ten million yen (more than 100,000 US dollars), making it one of the most expensive real estate in Japan. It is where you can find the infamous $10 cups of coffee and where virtually every leading brand name in fashion and cosmetics has a presence.

Kabuki Theater opened in 1889

The most well-known form of Japanese theater is Kabuki. Perhaps its fame comes from the wild costumes and swordfights, which used real swords until the 1680s. (Edo period1603-18677) They wanted to shock the audience with more lively and timely stories. The first performance was in 1603.

Over time Kabuki became not just performing in a new way, but a stylized art to be performed only a certain way.As a matter of interest, the popular Gekidan Shinkansen, a theatrical troupe based in Tokyo today, insists it follows pure kabuki tradition by performing historical roles in a modern, noisy, and outlandish way — to shock the audience as kabuki intended, if you will.
